SauerCrowd – Diversity on the inside and outside

Every week at Fundsup we feature new startups that force a radical breakthrough. This time we chat with Moritz Huber, Founder of SauerCrowd.

Moritz, what exactly are you doing?

SauerCrowd is an Amsterdam-based fermented foods company. Our mission is to source vegetables from biodynamic & organic farms in order to transform them into delicious, sustainable, and gut-friendly food products. SauerCrowd stands for the highest quality, taste, and gut-health in a sustainable, circular economy.

Where do you see its main application?

At SauerCrowd, we believe in gut health. Now, more than ever we see how important it is to stay close to our gut and do what’s good for our body. Our team of scientists, chefs, and researchers shares free articles within our Gut-Mind Journal online. Our mission is to help people with tips on how to get a diverse gut-microbiome, and of course, we offer our gut-mind boxes to give you more information and access to organic, raw, fermented foods.

“SauerCrowd is more than just a company, we want to gather the Crowd in order to bring change to our currently unsustainable food system.”

What is the impact of your business?

Our mission is to create more diversity on the inside and outside. We do this by providing organic food that is alive and full of gut-friendly lactic acid bacteria to support your digestive system. The health of our “Crowd” (which is how we call our customers/family) is not the only thing that’s important to us – but also the health of our soil! Choosing biodynamic & organic farmers and shortening the supply chain as much as possible is a key part of our brand mission.

SauerCrowd is more than just a company, we want to gather the Crowd in order to bring change to our currently unsustainable food system. Working C02 neutral, giving back to the soil (compo station), making use of a thousand-year-old technique which does not require any processing (raw, fermentation) and foremost sharing our knowledge on gut-health and fermentation is what makes us true ecopreneurs.

Where do you stand right now?

We completed the early start-up phase and after 1 ½ year on the market, we are about to launch our products in organic stores. Next to that, we grow our B2C SauerCrowd.nl webshop on a daily basis, reaching gut-health and fermentation fans EU wide.

Proof of success can also be seen in launching in over 400 LIDL stores all over the Netherlands within the month of July selling over 13.000 products within just 3 weeks.

We are in negotiations with one major Dutch organic retailer and one major German organic retailer. 2021 will be our scale-up year and together with our new co-producer, we have great production scale-up opportunities.

The demand for gut-healthy wellness foods with organic quality is increasing, and we want to become the market leader in this segment by 2023.

When are you planning to go to the market?

Already successfully established.

Who has invested in you and what kind of investors are you looking for?

We have one initial early-stage investor (from REWE Germany) with a minor holding. Now we are searching for angel investors with experience in the organic food market and expertise in how to scale EU-wide and how to handle upscale logistics/distribution. That will be our second round.

E-commerce is also becoming very important for us (counting for 40% of our revenue atm). So the investor should also bring experience or interest in this field with her/him.

Best of luck with everything!
